DAY OF ACTION NETS SPEEDING DRIVERS

Police Officers across the country carried out a 24 hour ‘Day of Action’ co-ordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) to detect motorist who were speeding, or driving inappropriately for the road conditions faced.

The day of action is only a small part of the Scottish Police Service’s year-round commitment to reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads. The campaign days are used to educate and encourage motorists to drive appropriately whilst being aware of the associated dangers.

In Tayside, a driver was stopped for speeding on A90, and further enquiries led to a search of the vehicle, which resulted in over £2500 being seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

In Strathclyde, a driver was stopped for a speeding offence on the M74 at Abington in adverse weather conditions, whilst accompanied by his wife and 2 young children who were seated in the rear. Further enquiries revealed that the driver had an expired driving licence and his vehicle was seized.

Chief Superintendent Charlie Common from Lothian and Borders Police, the ACPOS lead on Casualty Reduction, said:

“It is regrettable that I am again highlighting to motorists that they are showing a complete disregard for their own safety and that of other road users.

“During this latest day of action nearly 130 drivers were caught driving at excessive speed officers detected over 250 vehicle occupants who were not wearing a seatbelt.

It is particularly worrying that these offences were committed on a day when travelling conditions were at times extremely hazardous due to the heavy rainfall.”
